It’s not so much that they switched, but rather people who were ideologically similar sorted themselves into parties in the mid-20th century. Before the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, there were liberal Republicans and conservative Democrats, but the parties were a mix of both. After 1964, liberal Republicans joined liberal Democrats in the Democratic party and likewise for conservatives and the Republican party.
It’s past time we started referring to Fascism as an organization they same way people keep talking about Antifa, using a capital F and talking about its members and leaders. Instead of “right-wing vigilantes”, they’re “members of Fascism”. Maybe some people will be baited into arguing that Fascism isn’t an organization, opening up the perfect opportunity to make them try to justify calling Antifa an organization.
