I kind of understood it. He came from a super poor neighborhood, single mom that worked all the time, he didn’t have a lot of positive influences before joining the Army. I was a little worried about his comprehension skills since basic rifle marksmanship is kind of intense and takes some focus, but he did well. I was very happy that on the family day he had his low quarters tied and was proud that he had learned so much.
Kudos to you for taking the time to help him grow up. I have three sons who were active in a lot of team sports and band, etc. They brought home a lot of kids, some of whom ended up staying with us for extended periods. Not surprisingly, those who came from difficult circumstances often had no exposure to things we considered commonplace: using and washing “real” dishes, brushing teeth, bandaging a cut, one sweet kiddo had never had sleeping clothes/PJs. More than one left us with a new toiletry kit and a full duffel bag.
