The biggest one I went to was international, and students would have to send in an audition tape just to be accepted. They put you up in cabins and you would do sectional rehearsals (individual instruments or small sections of certain instruments, or even mixtures of specific instruments) throughout the day. Then you’d get some breaks for a fun time. There were also full band rehearsals and private practice time. Some folks also paid extra to get private lessons with the clinicians (I did this and it helped me greatly).

There are also “honor” or special bands that you need to audition for in-person and those were GREAT experiences too. I think they used your initial playing at arrival to sort that out, or it might have been an additional audition in person. I remember the pressure of that first time playing for the clinicians – they used that to decide what part you’d get, and I always freaked out because I knew I was the best in my school… but so was everyone else there.
