I never really thought of that. People often look at religion like they are born to it like nationality or hair color. Actually practicing and believing are irrelevant. Neither my parents have gone to church in my lifetime (I was born in ’82) and hold very atheistic views but I would not be surprised if they checked “Christian” on a census. You’ll often hear the phrase “well, I was born catholic” or something like that and it’s always bothered me. You aren’t born anything. You are indoctrinated to be whatever.

I disagree, just because there is a decline in religiosity in the U.S. does not mean that more people have a sound epistemology. Without an understanding of why these individuals are turning away from religion, we cannot make that assumption. I believe we are headed for a more tolerant future. That does not make us any more equipped to deal with the age of mass information.
