To reiterate for the record, this was in before Trump was president, and Penn’s experience with him as having spent time on Celebrity Apprentice. Even given that context in mind, it’s hard for me to watch much of the clip now just because of how terribly Penn’s comments about liking Trump have aged, but the stuff I quoted above has really stuck with me.

I think a lot of it also has to do with the fact that everything Trump says they understand immediately, like with ZERO thinking. He has groups like Cambridge Analytica (who came up with “drain the swamp”), giving him bite-sized slogans that can be endlessly repeated while shouting in the face of well thought out arguments that have 3+ syllable words.
