If Russia does not stand behind Iran, there will not be war. They cannot survive on their own and know it. With Russian help – particularly air support, but even Russian artillery, which is top-notch – they would put up a really nasty fight for the USA. Just isn’t going to happen. Iran’s government needed this to unite and distract from domestic problems.

Good. We civilians wish them no harm. They recognize what trump really wants is war or a terrorist attack so he can rally nationalistic fervor for reelection. They’re not taking the bait, so it seems. I suppose none of us can really know what they’re thinking.
