Basically wanting to talk. Annoying right, I’m thinking mind your own business, but would still politely make small talk and pretend I was in a hurry. Several weeks into this routine, asking personal questions about me and not giving up much information about herself, turns out she was a hospice caregiver to a spouse who had terminal cancer. She was lonely and needed human interaction of some sort besides caring for a dying loved one. She couldn’t get out much and this was a pre-pandemic sort of isolation. Paradigm shift. Now understood it was a much better day than her day watching a loved one dying and making sure their last days were as comfortable as possible. After her spouse passed away we actually became very good neighbors and I enjoyed our talks. She often had meals prepared for me when I got home. As I say, a neighbor could simply be a busy body and it’s understandable to be rude and makeup excuses to avoid the small talk…but not always.
