There’s the argument that higher education is needlessly expensive in the US, discouraging people from taking lower-paying jobs in public service or rural areas as they have a massive loan to pay off. Forgive the loan, massive economic stimulus, freedom for people to take jobs in places that need them. We need to fix college debt but just saying “schools can charge whatever they want, taxpayers will cover it” seems quite wrong. That will just make the problem worse as schools raise prices cuz why not? Free money.

Personally, I’m all for students having to repay their own loans but don’t get me wrong I don’t think the current levels of interest are acceptable. I believe that any loan should have a maximum amount chargeable as interest on top of the principal amount, for argument’s sake let’s say 50% on top so 100k becomes a maximum of 150k. Additionally, I think the interest should only be chargeable on the principle and that all payments should reduce the principle debt first.
