I think they would have been a lot happier and would have avoided a lot of canon backlash, if they’d presented Discovery as a fresh take on Trek, like the 2009 TOS films, instead of placing it explicitly in the Prime timeline.

That’s a good way of putting it. I’ve just tried to ignore everything “Trek” about it and enjoyed it as a general Sci-fi. It’s difficult to even have discussion about it anywhere as there are toxic fans of the show who won’t accept any criticism, as well as toxic anti-fans who won’t accept any of the positive aspects. And of course, these toxic people are the most vocal.
