This would also likely stem from the shame of the uniqueness, differences or perhaps self-described oddities a person has when comparing, orienting themselves to others in their environment – likely weighted towards seeing how different they are or perceive/feel they are, and not be able to relate or connect, engage, with their peer group.
Part of the process of unraveling the layers of coping is getting to the root cause, the source(s) of trauma, and helping or allowing those developmental processes to continue unhindered by coping mechanisms – arguably that is easier to do as an adult when you have more agency and hopefully access to adequate support vs.
