Does it speak poorly of the social health of the campus that such a level of potential violence exists that someone can’t come and fully exercise their 1st Amendment rights? Yes, and it may deter other speakers from coming to the school in the future. Does that mean the school shouldn’t do what they think is best for the students and guests on their campus to protect their physical safety? No.

Moving the speech to a smaller and more easily-securable venue seems like a perfectly reasonable alternative to canceling altogether. As the administrators of the aforementioned public space, the university could have been held financially liable had the protest turned into an all-out riot.
