In the middle of suburban Connecticut, my dad would light the lawn on fire in reasonably small patches. He said we had Zoysia grass which was uncommon – at least in the area. I guess it’s supposed to grow slower requiring less mowing. It looks like crap offseason as it turns to straw.

He said he had to burn it back to help clear the grass to grow better next season. I have no idea if any of his info was factual. No permit and totally illegal, but not even the neighbors cared. Never a visit from the fire department or police. He still lives there and no longer does this. And yet the grass behaves the same.
