The fossilization process replaces a lot of the bone with other minerals, which have a greater density by a bit (high 1’s for bone vs high 2’s for common fossilization minerals, in g/cm3.) The “weight” of the skull probably also includes a lot of impacted soil and rock in the sinus and cranial spaces. I’m genuinely curious now what an actual, unfossilized trike skull would weigh. Such ridiculously tanky critters.

My professor and friend, Dr. Schmidt (second from the left) invited me out and they have more to excavate and could only get the head this field season. This will be a long term project. It’s exciting but this site has not been that productive (except for some small bones) and in years past has been thought of getting a different site.
