This country is full of people who claim they would do anything to protect its people and their own families and then when presented with an opportunity to do just that will say, “But my rights.” As if slowing the spread of a virus we haven’t seen the magnitude of in a century strips them of any constitutional right whatsoever.
These people know they have rights, but don’t fully understand why. Our rights come from a social contract—we have freedoms because we have all agreed not to impede on other people’s freedoms as well. I would argue that not wearing a mask during a pandemic actually breaks this social contract.
