The subreddit doesn’t take kindly to anecdotes or humor. It’s meant to be a discussion on science. If they didn’t enforce the rules, it would devolve much like any other subreddit which grows over time. This is especially true because it’s a default sub. A bunch of new users go on there and try to politicize an issue or argue from conjecture which waters down the purpose of the sub. The mods do a pretty good job. It’s either that or make the sub private, and the latter doesn’t allow the information to be publicly available.

For instance, r/lawyers is a private subreddit and it’s a fantastic resource, but people can’t join willy nilly. Therefore, the content is heavily curated by the users and stays focused. Then you have r/as lawyers which is heavily moderated wherein only lawyers can comment which protects users from anecdote and legal advice (which lawyers are not allowed to provide to non-clients). Lastly, you have r/legal advice which is an absolute cesspool where actual lawyers are banned for telling people to get a lawyer, but cops are allowed to actively advocate against 4th, 5th, and 6th Amendment protections and non-attorneys provide legal advice all the time.
