Wow, thanks for all the positive messages. I’m working nights this week so I just woke up. For those asking about posthumous testing, saving samples, who isn’t being tested, etc., the hospital only has the mission to save lives and treat people right now, not perform functions (at a cost to the hospital) that should be performed by the government. We can’t use our limited tests and resources when it won’t impact patient care. We are doing things now that would never have been done before, like discharging patients with home oxygen rather than admit them – discharging people from the ED who a month or two ago would definitely be admitted. We are only testing people who require admission to the hospital.

We still have a shortage of testing so it makes sense not to test dead people. Apparently undercounting deaths is normal for new disease death counts. So we won’t know the real toll until a year or two when we can compare death rates. The only thing for certain is that the official you see today is undercounted. Counting deaths retrospectively is not as unprecedented as it seems. They “estimate” influenza death counts every year because there is no comprehensive testing for that either.
