I don’t practice anything, although I am academically fascinated by all sorts of cultural and religious practices, objects, and forms of worship, including Wicca and Pagan beliefs, past and present. I’m learning tarot, but I don’t personally ascribe any sort of spiritual meaning to it. On my dad’s side, I have German and White South African heritage (possibly from Irish colonists, records are unclear) whilst on my mum’s side, I can trace my ancestry back to the Norman Conquest. My dad’s atheist, my mum is a non-practicing Christian with a witchy aesthetic (her father was a vicar). Both parents wanted religion to be something I chose.

I’ve never heard it called that before, but I am familiar with the persecution of witchcraft in the medieval period. My parents are both into social history, with my dad focusing on post-industrial workers’ rights (anarchy/socialism, etc) and my mum focusing on preindustrial workers, especially women. My sister studies/songs English folk music as well, and is probably the witchiest of us all. The witch-hunts come up occasionally in conversation, as does the impact monarchs like James I and Henry VIII had on the peasantry.
