I’ve worked in care in various settings for longer than I ever intended to, and it’s actually quite scary how easy it is to get a job, even with zero experience. My first job as a home carer was one I never even applied for or interviewed for, just ‘here, have a job’, a few hours of training and two days later I’m out there on my own administering medication and being solely responsible for the health and well being of some extremely vulnerable people.
Not sure where this is located but most places I know of give a basic training course and send home care workers on their way. It really should be a more regulated industry. The UK here. I really want to start a campaign to get HCAs registered and regulated. They have more contact with vulnerable people in nursing and care homes than nurses, yet there is zip come back if they do anything wrong.
