My stepfather taught me how to tie a lot of knots when I was 10 years old. One of them was the hangman’s noose. I’m going to go on a limb here and say someone else was taught the same knot when they were a kid, were bored while someone was working on the car in the stall, and tied the knot with the pull rope. Nobody messed with it because it still worked and they looked at it moved on.
