Even worse, where did they get all those red robes and golden scissors? Especially when you realize how many of them there are at the end. What does their supply chain look like? Where did the money for this stuff come from? How did they coordinate this between different cells? They can barely speak!

My logic on this is Red is an unreliable narrator. She was taken to the underground when she was 6 and nobody down there speaks. Who would have told her the entire backstory? Even if it was written down somewhere I don’t think a 6-year-old could read and understand a scientific/medical textbook/journal. There is really no reason for Red to know the origin of the underground.
